SULPHATED OILS WITHOUT WASHING

Reaction with excess sulphuric acid is the common way to manufacture sulphated triglycerides.
The final product is neutralized with a base and subsequently washed with a 10% salt solution in order to get rid of excess sulphate in the final product.
The reaction/washing/separation time is between 12 and 24 hours. On top of that it generates high salt containing waste water, very costly to dispose. Triglycerides (and mixtures thereof) with an Iodine value >90 I2/100 g oil can be manufactured with the Alter process, resulting in a clear appearance of the final product. Typical concentration 50-70%. Sulphated beef tallow, with an Iodine value around 50 I2/100 g oil, is a pourable turbid viscous liquid. Needless to say there is no washing step involved and the final product is completely water soluble.
The “without washing” version of a sulphate oil can be made in 1 till 6 hours and generates no waste-water.
Appearance of the final product is clear and 10% emulsion in water is translucent.
In case of sulphated beef tallow, 10% emulsion water is off-white turbid.
OTHER APPLICATIONS OF SULPHATED OILS:
Emulsifier and humectant in cosmetics.
Defoamer in paper and sugar industry.
Surfactant and wetting agent in textile, paint and lubricants.
